Enhanced DUI enforcement is just around the corner

The summer can be dangerous for motorists across the country. In fact, according to AAA, so many Americans die in traffic accidents during the summer months that law enforcement agencies around the country refer to the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the 100 deadliest days of the year.

While many factors contribute to the uptick in deadly motor vehicle accidents during the summer, drivers who are under the influence of alcohol may play a role. Consequently, when you drive between the end of May and the beginning of September, you are likely to encounter enhanced DUI enforcement.

Roadside stops

State and local officers often increase DUI patrols around major drinking holidays. During the summer, you may have a heightened risk of a roadside stop on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Because these holidays are close to weekends, you can expect stepped-up enforcement to continue for multiple days.

Sobriety checkpoints

In addition to increasing roadside stops, officers in the Golden State may set up sobriety checkpoints. At these checkpoints, officers temporarily detain drivers long enough to determine whether they may have blood alcohol concentrations above California’s 0.08% legal limit. For sobriety checkpoints to pass legal muster, though, officers must post signs and provide a safe place for drivers to stop.

During both roadside stops and sobriety checkpoints, officers must closely follow federal, state and local laws. They also should not deviate from established department protocols. Ultimately, if you are facing DUI charges from a summertime arrest, it may be in your interest to investigate whether officers complied with their legal obligations.
