Only time will reduce your BAC

Sep 24, 2026 | DUI

If you are looking to reduce your blood alcohol concentration (BAC), you may be doing so because you want to avoid DUI charges. You know that you need to drive your car, and you want to ensure that your BAC is under the legal limit before you do.

The only way to do this is just to take the time for your body to metabolize the alcohol. Reports indicate that this generally happens at about 0.015% per hour. This means that it can be a lengthy process. It would take four hours to go from 0.06% all the way back down to zero, for instance.

But as soon as you stop drinking, your body is working on metabolizing that alcohol and getting it out of your system. Given enough time, your BAC will return to zero.

Can you speed up this process?

No, you cannot artificially speed up the process or get sober more quickly. People will sometimes talk about different tactics that they believe will help. For instance, they may say you should take a cold shower or drink a cup of coffee.

Often, these types of tactics just wake you up. If you are feeling intoxicated and fatigued, caffeine or a cold shower will make you feel more alert. But if you were to take a breath test, neither one will actually have reduced your BAC.
